Whoa Is Me by Down With Webster

Reality in this video is presented as a life full of fame and partying. Like the typical party-esque video everyone is attractive and having fun. Reality is shown this way because of the nature of the song. The lyrics to the song and the entire point to the song is talking about how awesome and cool the band is (or how "whoa" they are, according to the lyrics). By showing everyone having fun at a show of theirs and everyone around them being attractive and partying it, in music video standards, makes them awesome.

The video is set at night, which is when most party videos are set in. Though, not too many pop/party music videos are set on a bright sunny afternoon, either. There are lots of flashing lights and some slow motion performance scenes, which are quite common in videos of a pop-rock genre (though this song falls more into the pop genre).

The main value statement in this video is that the more you party, the cooler you are. It could also have to do with being full of yourself, if you look at the lyrics, and it shows that through the way one of the band members acts, with his somewhat diva like attitude. Being a diva is what it takes to be a celebrity - if you want to be famous, be a diva.

This video appeals to teenagers because it's about being a celebrity. A lot of videos show a story, but this was about being famous and a celebrity, which is everything that most teens dream of being. Celebrities are idolized and most teenagers want to have the life that a celebrity does - partying, red carpets, playing music on stage, etc.

Personally, I like the video, and as a commercial for the band, I think it's a good video. Down With Webster wasn't a hugely famous band before this video, and while they still are't giant they did gain a lot of fans after this song and video. They did a very good job of making the band seem incredibly cool and popular. Their video before this was a very funny, joke type video and this video made them seem like they were already incredibly famous and popular and cool and that everyone should want to be like them. It did a great job of selling the band, and it fit well with the song, since the song is about being cool and a celebrity.

Media Profile

I believe that media is incredibly important in my life. Just like everyone else, I don't (and probably couldn't) go a day without encountering some form of media. Not that I complain about that, as I do enjoy it. Media, while it can be annoying at times (when it's the most intense part of a TV show and all of a sudden there's a pause for a commercial), but, as the class all knows by now, it's also enjoyable (I mean, to get annoyed with commercials, I must have been enjoying that TV show).

My Top Three:

Music: 

If I am able to, I am always listening to music, or singing a song that is stuck in my head. It's been incredibly important to my life, and I hate the thought of not having an iPodor something to take with me to listen to music when I go places. I don't have a favourite band or artist that has influenced me in a huge way, but there are multiple bands that have done that for me.

Books: A lot of teenagers today will willingly say that they hate reading. I am constantly reading. I love being able to pick up a book and enter into a whole other world that someone made up. I have read and re-read the many books that I own many times, and it feels wrong for me to walk past a book store and not at least go in and find something to read. I love writing, too, and ever since I was a little kid I've wanted to write me own novel. I read any kind of books I can possibly get my hands on, and always have several books on the go. Unfortunately, due to school and homework, it's hard to read as much as I want, but during summer I'm always reading. And, like a lot of people, I have to say that Harry Potter was what started it all.

Social Networking: 

Staying true to the teenage norm, social networking is something that I do constantly. I am fairly certain that I can say I have an account on almost all (or at least, all of the major) social networking sites, whether I use them or not. There are many people that I have "met" through social networking sites, and I use them as a way to keep in touch with friends that I have that live far away from me. 

Thoughts on Pop Culture:

Personally, I'm a huge fan of pop culture. I love talking about pop culture, I love watching/reading/hearing about anything to do with pop culture. It's something that I genuinely enjoy. However, I have a love/hate relationship with the new technology helping is communicate. I love it when I want to use it, other times the constant communication seems like too much. I don't need to always be talking to someone. Sooner or later you run out of things to say. Personally, I use media mostly for entertainment purposes, but I know how and do use it for educational/information purposes when I need to. 

Desert Island Choices:

TV Show – Supernatural

I'll be the first to tell you, I'm not a huge TV fan. I really don't have the patients to watch the clock and have my favourite show to come on. However, when I do find a show that I love, everything changes. I make sure every week I tune into the show, and if I miss it I am sure to catch up. Supernatural is one of those shows, to me. I’ve been watching it for a few seasons now, and am currently in the process of watching the earlier seasons I have missed. The show started out almost as a one hour supernatural horror/thriller movie for TV. Now it has more of a plot, and has developed more into an actual dramatic series, but none the less it’s the same level of awesome it’s always been. I absolutely adore the show, and am always sure to watch the show when it’s on.

Movie – Push

I love mystery. I love fitting clues together and trying to figure everything out. And this is exactly what this movie does. It’s one giant action packed mystery and it’s wonderful. Okay, I’m sure there are more action packed movies, but it does have quite a nice balance to it. It involves people with “psychic powers” and that just adds to the mystery to it.

Books – Harry Potter

Harry Potter is honestly my childhood. I remember being young and sitting on a picnic table at a camp ground (my family is big on camping) and sitting all day and just reading the Harry Potter books I had. In total I think I’ve read them all about 50 times, and they never get old. The characters are so complex and developed that when you’ve read them all through your childhood they become like old friends to you. It sounds incredibly cliché to say that they are my favourite books, but they are. I don’t think I will ever find any books or book series that will come close to as good as the Harry Potter books are.
